Government Of India has blocked 59 apps that have links and are primarily owned by Chinese firms which include the infamous TikTok, WeChat and UC Browser, Shareit, and many others due to the growing tensions between China following the June 15 clashes at Ladakh in which 20 Indian soldiers died in action. While many sources of NDTV & LIVEMENT said inputs from intelligence agencies that these apps and many others too are indulged in Data Infringements, Violation of “Terms of Use”, tracking restricted usage and sharing of Malware & Spyware. As soon as this news was out the Government’s Official TikTok account with around 1.1 million was disabled.
It’s a strong response from the GOI suggesting the “Supremacy” and Immediate action against Data Infringers and Policy Violators. The action was taken just after a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his “Man Ki Baat” that, “We will buy local and be vocal for local and this will help India become stronger”. GOI has given a befitting response just when the #BoyCottChineseProducts was trending on Twitter. He also spoke of the countrywide call for the boycott of Chinese goods, juxtaposing it against the government's "Atma Nirbhar Bharat" campaign.
The news was released in a statement by the Ravi Shankar Prasad, Law & Justice, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Minister of India, “For safety, security, defense, sovereignty & integrity of India and to protect data & privacy of people of India the Government has banned 59 mobile apps. Jai Hind!”
The statement from the Ministry of Electronics and Information and Technology said it had received an "exhaustive recommendation" from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The ministry said it also received representations from people on "security of data and risk to privacy" regarding certain apps.
The release also said that, "The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures. At the same time, there have been raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians."
The move comes amid a countrywide call from traders and civil society to boycott Chinese products and services after the June 15 clashes. The government had chipped in with a bar on Chinese equipment for the 4G up-gradation of the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and sacking of a Chinese firm that had a Rs 471-crore railways contract.
Following the ban, last week GOI also asked the online selling platforms to mention “Origin of Product” on their product information page. The companies Amazon, Flipkart, and others have agreed to this order and will be providing the “Origin of Product”.
Now it's our duty to BoyCott these Chinese products and Chinese funded [ more than 30%–40% funding ] companies who are the puppets of the Communist Government of China. This movement started from 15 June should not be forgotten and we should look forward to the Indian Alternatives helping our own Netizens.
Experts suggested that the ban on apps is a major blow to China's Digital Silk Route ambitions, eroding millions of dollars from the valuation of its companies. This could also lead to more countries following India's path in acting against these Apps.
The Party Office released that, "The Modi government shows its tremendous resolve and dexterity of engaging China on multiple fronts and hitting China where it hurts the most."
